GeoJobs Live

By Dr. Zachary Christman

The Department hosted a special careers panel on March 18th, entitled "GeoJobs Live" after our jobs and opportunities email list.

The event was more than 3 hours and included ten guest speakers across 3 panels, spanning jobs in the public sector, private sector, and graduate and higher education pursuits.

While many attendees came from Rowan University, potentially earning extra credit or excellent advice to support their curriculum, the event attracted an international audience after being posted on social media, drawing more than 120 attendees from India, the UK, Canada, China, and across the United States!

Joseph Kerski, education manager for ESRI, enthusiastically delivered a keynote presentation titled, "Charting a Course for GIS Education for 2030", highlighting the timeless skills and perspectives, as well as new opportunities and ideas, available for those who integrate GIS into their careers.

The panel on Jobs in the Public Sector featured two Rowan alumna, Meghan Wren, at the New Jersey Office of Planning Advocacy and Sabrina Hill, in the Bureau of Water System Engineering of the NJ DEP, as well as Lorissa Luciani, Director of Planning and Code Enforcement of West Deptford Township.

The panel on Jobs in the Private Sector included 3 Rowan alumni: Ed Farrell, who has also recently served as adjunct instructor, now at DVG Interactive, Alyssa Morales of New Jersey American Water, and Amanda Paton of Colliers Engineering & Design.

Finally, the Panel on Jobs in the Private Sector included Alison Thieme, a PhD Candidate at the University of Maryland Department of Geographical Sciences, and two faculty members from other institutions who direct graduate programs, Dr. Hamil Pearsall at Temple University Department of Geography and Urban Studies and Dr. Monica Haddad, at Iowa State University Department of Community and Regional Planning.

Many thanks to our speaker and panelists and to Mike Brein, Dr. Ashley York, Dr. Kevin Keenan, and Dr. Zachary Christman for coordinating this event.
