GIS Day Talk: Using Real Estate Advertisement Text and Mortgage Lending Data to Understand Urban Dynamics

Please join us Wednesday, November 15th from 2 pm to 3:30 pm (GIS Day!) in Business Hall Room 104 to hear guest speaker Elizabeth Delmelle.

Elizabeth Delmelle is an Associate Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning and director of the Master of Urban Spatial Analytics (MUSA) program at the University of Pennsylvania.

The title of her talk is Using Real Estate Advertisement Text and Mortgage Lending Data to Understand Urban Dynamics.

Abstract: This talk addresses an application of natural language processing methods to real estate advertisement text of property listings from 2001-2020 to analyze local housing dynamics spatially and temporally using semi-supervised text classification methods. We demonstrate how the share of properties advertising explains significant changes in the share of mortgage applicants by race and income, using tipping points in the data to examine potential neighborhood changes in near real time.
