Class of 2021 Student Awards
The School of Earth & Environment is honored to present the Class of 2021 Dean's Outstanding Senior Award and Medallion recipients. These students have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence, leadership, and service to the university and greater community.
2021 Dean’s Outstanding Senior Awards
Environmental Science − Matthew Pierce
Growing up in Cumberland County Matthew Pierce began his college career in 2016 at Cumberland County College (now Rowan College of South Jersey) as an Environmental Science major. After receiving his A.S. in Environmental Science he transferred to Rowan University and majored in Biological Science and minored in Environmental Science until the new Rowan Environmental Science degree was approved. He then became a dual-major in Biological Sciences and Environmental Science. Matthew will be working this summer as a field technician for the Georgia Coastal Ecosystem Long Term Ecological Research program at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, Georgia. Starting in August he will begin graduate coursework for a PhD in Ecology in the lab of Dr. Jeb Byers in the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia.
Geography, Planning, & Sustainability − Khristine Seay
Kristine (Khrissy) Seay graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geographical Information Science and minors in Geography and Community and Environmental Planning. She has conducted a senior seminar research project on the impact of climate change on sea ice and polar bears in Alaska. Outside of the classroom, Khrissy has served in a variety of leadership positions, including as an Executive Board Member of the Department’s GeoClub. She interned at Scotland Run Park and worked on the creation of new trial maps. She is now a member of South Jersey Cultural Alliance’s cultural map project team. Khrissy has accepted a position as a GIS Analyst in Rochester, NY and hopes to pursue graduate study at Cornell in the future.
Geology − Tara Lonsdorf
Tara K. Lonsdorf is graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology with a concentration in General Geosciences, a minor in Geographical Information Science, and a Certificate of Undergraduate Studies in Technical and Professional Writing from the College of Communication & Creative Art. Tara took two different field courses during her studies at Rowan University successfully completing both and finding her passion in geology. For her senior research she combined her knowledge of Geographical Information Science and Geology to be the first student to complete a detailed, digitized mapping of some of the fossils recovered from the Jean and Rich Edelman Fossil Park. Tara has also shown leadership within the Rowan community at large, being an active contributor and Editor of the university newspaper, The Whit. Tara will continue to peruse her passion for Geology through a higher degree at the University of Michigan, where she has been accepted as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences studying with Professor Nathan Niemi.
2021 Medallion Awards
GIS Medallion − Elly Thomas
Eleanor (Elly) Thomas is completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Geographical Information Science, with three minors in Geography, Community & Environmental Planning, and Environmental & Sustainability Studies. She is also completing three certificates of undergraduate studies in: Food Systems Planning, Adventure Education Leadership, and Spanish. Under the supervision of Dr. Christman, Elly has conducted research on the impacts of Hurricane Dean on the Yucatan Peninsula. She has been an active student leader, serving as a senator representing the department’s GeoClub in the Student Government Association. She also served as President of Rowan Outdoors Club and Rowan Club Field Hockey. After graduation, Elly will be working as an Outdoor Educator in Midcoast Maine.
Environmental Studies Medallion − Eliana Moorer
Eliana (Ellie) Moorer is completing her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Environmental & Sustainability Studies. She is also completing three minors in Geography, Geographic Information Science, and Community & Environmental Planning. Ellie has been active as a campus leader, serving as a member of the Rowan University Student Planning Organization and as a representative to the Student Government Association. Ellie explained that she chose her major because it offered “an essential pathway to a greener planet, taking into account multiple avenues for long-lasting solutions.” After graduation, Elly intends to work as a sustainability advisor and then pursue graduate studies.
