Program Description
This 2025 Study Abroad Program will unfold in three countries and three cities within them: Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon), Cambodia (Siem Reap), and Thailand (Bangkok). This trip will introduce students to Southeast Asia, a part of the world that plays a significant role in globalization via manufacturing output, has had and continues to have incredible geopolitical importance (especially Vietnam, given its proximity to China and coastline along the South China Sea), and cultural inputs that are sometimes unknown or underappreciated to students in the U.S. and Europe. The Southeast Asian Realm has been colonized, militarized, and globalized, all of which matters for the present-day articulation of the space and people, including this study abroad (which involves helping students adopt a lens of study informed by the global south). Students will learn about processes of colonization in the region and more broadly, how resistance was implemented, and what these historical events and processes mean for today. Students will study the legacy of not only European involvement, but that of other Asian countries and the legacy of the tragic U.S. war in Vietnam. Students will study globalization by comparing the different cities that we visit, including the first site which is Ho Chi Minh City and the financial center of Vietnam. Finally, students will learn about the natural beauty of the region as well as of the culture, including the many contributions that flow from this part of the world.
Learning Objectives
1. Discuss the major features of the Southeast Asian realm, including both physical/natural and cultural systems.
2. Analyze how the regional and local environments support specific cultures and ways of life in this part of the world.
3. Identify the impact of capitalist economic systems (especially global trade and manufacturing) on the urbanization in Southeast Asia, utilizing a comparative urban analysis framework.
4. Identify the impact of colonial processes, including historical geopolitical strategies and U.S. military interventions, in each country and city visited.
5. Adopt a "global south" critical lens to studying urbanization and economy throughout the study abroad, beginning with a critique of this program's title.

How much does this cost?
$5,829 (includes air fare, hotel costs, all program-related travel within each city, and most meals). This price is based on 15-19 students participating in the study abroad. The overall price will reduce by $300 if 20 or more students attend. Greater numbers of students will lower the price paid per student. There are also some Rowan University related study abroad fees and students will need spending money while abroad.
NOTE: Students are allowed to purchase their own plane tickets to and from Southeast Asia. This is known as the “Personal Travel Option,” and a student must arrange this option with the logistics provider, EF Tours. If you do select this option, the overall price of the program reduces to $3,550 for students and $4,090 for adults. That price would include all program activities, hotels, and meals, but not the flights.
